What

The Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance is a collective of 30 Indigenous nations from Ecuador and Peru. The Alliance’s work is dedicated to the conservation of 86 million acres of the Amazon rainforest, striving to protect the biodiversity and the rights of Indigenous people within the region.

Who

The Alliance includes Indigenous federations CONFENIAE (Ecuador), AIDESEP (Peru), ORPIO, and COICA, working alongside NGOs like the Pachamama Alliance and Fundación Pachamama.

Where & When

The Alliance was formed in 2017 and to protect the Amazon Sacred Headwaters, an area larger than Italy, located in the headwaters of the Amazon River, spanning across the Napo, Pastaza, and Marañon River Basins.

Why

The project aims to prevent ecological degradation by halting industrial-scale resource extraction and advocating for a shift to a regenerative bioeconomy.
